Tips for a Relaxed, Meaningful Session

If you have a dog, you already know this: they’re not just a dog. They’re the third wheel on the couch, the morning routine, the witness to every late-night takeout decision and lazy Sunday. So when couples ask if they can bring their dog to their engagement session, my answer is always a very enthusiastic yes.

Including your dog in your engagement photos isn’t about creating a “perfect” image, though we will do our best to fit that in as well—it’s about telling the story of your life as it actually is right now. You will know best if that means slobbery kisses, muddy paws, and how to prepare for that.

Why Include Your Dog in Your Engagement Photos

Dogs instantly break the ice. The moment you’re focused on them—laughing when they do something ridiculous or bending down for a quick cuddle—everything softens. The photos become less about posing and more about connection, which is what I’m always after. You forget the camera is there, and suddenly the moments feel real. That’s where the magic lives.

They also bring out a side of you that’s hard to fake: tenderness, playfulness, and the kind of love that shows up in the smallest gestures. Those are the details that make your photos feel alive years from now.

What to Consider Before Your Engagement Photos with Your Dog

Bringing your pup along does take a bit of planning, but nothing complicated:

  • Bring a helper. A friend or family member can hold the leash when we want a few photos without your dog, or help keep them entertained between shots.
  • Pack the essentials. Treats, a favourite toy, water, and a lint roller (in case I forget mine!) go a long way.
  • Choose a dog-friendly location. Open spaces, quiet trails, or anywhere your dog already feels comfortable are ideal.  When deciding on a location, whether you’re bringing a pet or not, I always suggest somewhere of sentimental value if such a place exists.  An at home session or somewhere you spend a lot of time, somewhere that these photos will bring you back to, every time.
  • Embrace the chaos. You know your dog best.  I don’t expect perfection (I am a golden retriever mom after all), and come with plenty of patience so no need to get frazzled if we’re not getting those dreamy shots right away.  One way or another, we are making memories BUT this is where bringing a helper comes in handy so we can still ensure to make the most of the session.

It’s okay if they’re only there for part of the session

Some dogs are stars for 15 minutes and then very clearly done. That’s totally fine. We can start with photos including your pup, then let them head home or wander with your helper while we finish the session with just the two of you. You get the best of both worlds.

At the end of the day, it’s about what matters to you

Your engagement session should feel like you—not a version of yourselves that feels stiff or overly styled. If your dog is a huge part of your life, they belong in this chapter too. Years from now, when you look back at these photos, you won’t just remember how you looked—you’ll remember who you were together. And sometimes that includes a wagging tail right between you.

If you’re thinking about bringing your dog to your engagement session and want help planning something relaxed, fun, and very you, I’m always happy to help make it happen and ensure we are using a dog friendly location.

And of course, we’ll do our best to get a solo portrait of your favourite furry fella in their favourite place, for the wall while we’re out!
